Most people love to travel, but few embrace the spirit of travelling alone. The beauty of solo travel is that it forces you to step out of your comfort zone – you get to make new friends, talk to random people, plan your own time, and most importantly, discover yourself in the process. While travelling alone may seem intimidating, we have prepared some tips so you can be ready for your next big solo trip.
1. Always do your research
Researching the place before you go can help you get a sense of direction so you are less likely to feel overwhelmed by the unfamiliarity. Also, check out Google street images of the place you will be going to reduce the chances of getting lost. Plan a fuss-free itinerary and improvise along the way. Take the trip you’ve dreamed of and have fun!
2. Stay in an Airbnb
One great thing about staying in an Airbnb is the chance to meet your host or the other guests who are also staying in the same apartment. Get authentic and trusty advice from your host, or exchange notes with your fellow Airbnb mates. Enjoy a home-cooked meal (by your host, if you are lucky) or hang out with your new friends if both parties have similar itineraries.
3. Organise an #InstaMeet
You know what’s so great about social media, and especially Instagram? It is having the possibility to organise a meetup with your friends from Instagram – those who live/grew up there – to bring you around. Not only will you be able to exchange photography tips, your Instagram friends can also show you the best places to visit from a local’s perspective. #InstaMeet
4. Prepare your own snacks and drinks
Sightseeing on your own means having flexible meal times – you can choose to have dinner at a restaurant, or not. If dining alone makes you uncomfortable, pack some simple snacks like a sandwich to keep you from getting hungry, and bring along a tumbler of hot/cold drinks to quench your thirst whenever you need to. Imagine the feeling of not having to deliberate over meal choices!
5. Keep your money safe
Travelling alone means you will have to be extra careful of your belongings, and especially your money. Instead of carrying the bulk of the cash in your wallet, try separating them into different areas – in your bag, pocket, money belt, or even inside your shoes and bra. If you are staying in a reputable hotel, keep your important documents and some cash in the safe as a backup in case of emergency.
